I'm in love with my colemak Maltron.

However, colemak says nothing about the thumb clusters. There are two varieties of this board, you can see them here:

I wonder if there's any research behind that, or user complaints, or what. I have the 89 model, with arrow keys in two thumb clusters. I wonder if I should remap or learn this weird way to move around. All feels good, but selecting text with ctrl shift arrows. That is virtually impossible.

Anyone knows a good reason to use one or the other? I can remap.

Haven't tried any of them, but the 90 layout looks more evolved and intuitive (arrow cross, 6 on the left hand in accordance with the majority of other split keyboards etc).

Numbers don't bother me. At most I'd remap the arrow keys, and control next to the windows key. the modifiers on the thumb cluster are very important. Maybe backspace on both clusters.
Oh, and /? in its rightful place next to >.

    xmodmap? or anything better?

No touchtyping possible on the numpad is a bit silly. Otherwise I could use the arrows there. In general, the numpad is pretty hopeless.
