Is it possible/feasible to implement a system on the forum whereby a newly registered user's first post would not become visible until approved by an admin? Would probably prevent 99% of the spam every becoming visible and would act as a deterrent.

Indeed. I've reported those latest breaches. Sometimes that makes them go away right away, but not this time. At the least, a report should send the posts into hibernation until an admin can look at them.
Also, maybe there could be more than one admin? I'd be happy to help.
And the idea of updating the board software seems as relevant as ever.
