I understand that the Colemak remapping method for Xkb uses the XkbSymbols file. But what is XkbVariant in comparison, and could that have been used instead?

For instance, I read in the documentation (/etc/X11/README.config or something) that you can specify a bunch of variants of the main XkbLayout and then hotkey switch between them. That sounds like how I install a layout variant in Windows? But if this is done with Symbols instead, then what on earth does Variant do? This I couldn't find.

Also, how would I go about editing xorg.conf so that I can have a hotkey that switches between QWERTY and Colemak?

Please enlighten this Linux n00b if you can.

I would like to know this as well.
    Come on somebody.
If there is one fault with Colemak, then this is it.

At the moment, I'm using dual scripts named QWFP and QWER that switch back and forth when I type those letters from the command line. Not very elegant, but it works.

There has to be a more "right" and solid way of doing this.
