I've been using Colemak for years now, and recently got a job that involves alot of typing. Installing any kind of freeware on your company computer is not allowed without IT permission, so I'm trying to figure out how to go about requesting Colemak for my computer in a way that will be responded to well.

Does anyone have any experience/tips for this before I try asking the IT dept.? I'm guessing their primary concern will be security issues. Is there anyway to assure them that the software does not contain malware?

    OS: Windows 7

Well you can give them the file to test it if they want. If your job requires a lot of typing I don't see why would they deny something so important for you.

    You ask, you'll get.

I ask, then got the full admin right to install Colemak on my work computer.

If it's your computer then installing a registry remapping is the most transparent. Your IT dept might accept installing that for you (by user is possible). Trying to explain the intricacies of the MS Keyboard Layout Creator might be a tall order depending on how well informed your IT dept is.

I use Portable Keyboard Layout (PKL) at my workplace. Then you don't have to "install" anything - but in reality you're running an executable so it isn't any IT person's idea of nice. Also, be warned that some overzealous virus scanners may reject compiled AutoHotkey code because it uses some interesting VBCode (from what I gather). Furthermore, under Win7 I don't think PKL will always work for you?

Why wouldn't it work under Windows 7? I haven't met such a problem.

Autohotkey uses keyboard hook programming, so it can be alerted mistakenly as keyloggers.

@pafkata: I haven't used it all that much with Win7 but I was under the impression that even the low-level keyboard hook it uses doesn't work with 'admin' windows after they buffed security? So for some windows you'd be back to QWERTY.
