The keyboard shortcut that is stated on the installation page for mac to quickly switch between layouts (command + option + space) only works in the OSs previous to tiger (all below 10.4). In tiger, this shortcut opens the spotlight window. To make this keyboard shortcut work, go to
system preferences > keyboard & mouse > keyboard commands
and change the shortcuts accordingly.
Another way to do this by going to
system preferences > spotlight
and disabling or changing the keyboard shortcut. To activate or change the named shortcut for switching the layout, go to
system preferences > international > input menu > keyboard shortcuts
