Did you spend hours figuring out where to put the keys or did you use a special algorithm. I am just curious to know. Is there a plan to make Colemak a standard like Qwerty and Dvorak are in the most of the operating systems?

Let me answer that in part (Shai already has, but I couldn't find the post):
    - At https://colemak.com/Easy_to_learn you'll see much of the rationale he used.
    - Colemak was an improvement on Asetion (Shai's older layout), and principles from other layouts were also given thought.
    - Algorithms like https://colemak.com/Compare were used to compare the layouts, but no direct evolution tools were employed.

If us enthusiasts have our way, of course it'll be standard! But we don't have clout with Microsoft, Apple nor ANSI (yet, hehe). So far, the only taker has been X.Org (Linux), but I consider that alone a huge step for Colemak.

So if I understood this right; Ubuntu Gutsy will feature Colemak out of the box?

No, Ubuntu Gutsy does not have Colemak support as it comes with an older version of xkeyboard-config, but It will make it to Ubuntu 8.04.
