Only one donation?  I'm sure that 3,600 downloads and 33,500 unique visits cost you more than nine and change Euros in hosting fees...

I should probably put a bit of money in my PayPal account again and send a bit of it over to you.

These have been the statistics I've been waiting for.

Colemak does seem to get many hits from Google. I wonder why that is the case. Is it because it is used more than Yahoo and Live Search? At any rate, Colemak's popularity is growing.

Also, the site in Japanese provided an interesting read as well as good reading practice. It's cool enough to read Japanese, but to read about something one is interested in is even cooler.

    For me.

I would love to make a donation, but the deal killer is paypal.  I hate paypal.

I killed my paypal account some time ago and yet they still try to own my credit card on the net.

that are a lot of merchant account alternatives.

The reason is because of Google's PageRank system.

The homepage is currently scoring a 4/10, which is amazing to me based on what I know about PageRank currently.

I'm no expert, but I can help shed a little light on it.

Sites move up in ranks when they have more websites that refer to it. Think of it like a voting system. The more sites that "vote" for colemak.com, the higher it will be in the search results. More importantly, it's not just pure numbers that count. If the site giving the link to colemak.com has a larger pagerank, that vote will count for more!

My guess is that LiveSearch either indexed colemak.com (or another site which has a link to you) early on, or they have a very different method of ranking sites.

Shai, I was just wondering where you got the info about cmk being the 3rd most popular layout from. (As stated on colemak.com) Not questioning the reliability, just wondering!

Of all the alternative keyboard layouts, there's just no real competition. The closest contender for touch typing in English would be the Maltron keyboard layout, which has existed since the 70's. However, for example, a Google search for "Maltron" brings less results than for "colemak", and only a very small percent of those results refers to the layout. Doing a blog search for the Maltron layout only brings up only 1 relevant result from a dead site from 2 years ago. Looking at del.icio.us about the Maltron layout only brings up 2 results as well. Looking at other metrics brings similar results. There are no derived version of Maltron, no software that specifically supports it, etc...

Oh, I see. Rather unspectacular, =P but thanks!
I think Maltron is less popular because it is such an alien keybard which totally scares people away when they see it.

    Hey Shai,

How about a 1/2 year update. In 2006, 3800 downloads. What's the count to June 30/2007? It would be interesting to know.

    Thanks,

    Jay Walker

    Thanks, Shai.

Hopefully, it'll keep on the same path. Let's see; nearly doubled downloads in six months (over 2006). Let me work this out in Excel ... back in a minute ...

OK, back from my Excel spreadsheet. I can report, with confidence, that Colemak has had 80% more downloads than last year, in half the time.

If the 80% growth rate is maintained with the same assumption in a period of time half as short as the previous one, by my calculation there'll be something like 30 million downloads per hour happening by year end.

I think that's all the work that needs to be done on these forums; the path is set!!!  :)

I'll bet you got an increase in traffic after the Matt Mullenweg episode on the Tim Ferriss podcast. This was how I found out about Colemak.
