I type the same language (Dutch). Regarding the letter IJ.  You might know that the digraph IJ is an official typographical letter. IJ and ij  are Unicode symbols U0132 and U0133. In monospace letters it looks better too. Here are some words, first typed i + j  later as one symbol.

a b c d IJs. Fijn ijs, mijn ijzer
........12345678901234567890

a b c d IJs. Fijn ijs, mijn ijzer.
........12345678901234567890

Here it is in monospace, now you 'll see a difference

a b c d IJs. Fijn ijs, mijn ijzer.
........12345678901234567890

a b c d IJs. Fijn ijs, mijn ijzer.
........12345678901234567890

- solution 1: remap Y to IJ . Use AltGr Y to type Y.  If you switch a lot between Dutch & English, you might make 2 variants of Colemak, one with Y, one with IJ

- solution 2: use a free key for IJ. For instance Colemak ;

I have looked into those solutions but found them too complicated in the end.

Thanks for the suggestions, they're pretty good and I was unaware that the 'ij' can actually be one symbol instead of two. I'll remap the 'ij' to the ';'-key for now and see if that works. Mapping it to the 'y' key would be pretty good in Dutch, however, I type too much in English, so that's not really an option.

Also: 2 years into colemak, and finally managed to beat my old record. I didn't really do any tests for a couple of months, and this was the first test I took. Didn't even restart.

These speeds are just mind-blowing for me. I doubt I could even think 111 words per minute.

It seems that some of us just aren't that fast, regardless of layout and other tricks.

I definitely can't think 140 wpm but I could type it... the words were in front of me :) that definitely means that in practice there are few cases where I have use for typing that fast for more than a very short burst.

Well, actually normal speech can reach 200+ WPM if you're a fast speaker. So a good stenotypist manages to keep up with even the fastest speakers. If I recall correctly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Words_per_minute

Interestingly, lectures tend to be around 100–150 WPM while thought easily hits 300 WPM. So your brain simply gets bored after a while and starts "multitasking" (which it cannot truly do, but switch-tasking is something it's good at). But then after a while the wandering thoughts may take over and you start losing what the lecturer is saying. Has this happened to most of us? Oh yes.

Cool wikipedia page. By 'think' 140 wpm, I meant more 'come up with 140 words to say per minute for any period of time for more than a few seconds.

I always tell myself that too, but you're much closer than me, I'm not even halfway there :p
